An immediate annuity — officially a Single Premium Immediate Annuity, or SPIA — is the simplest income deal in existence: you hand the insurance company a lump sum, and they start sending you a guaranteed monthly check within a year, usually within 30 days. For life, if that’s what you choose.
The 30-Second Version
- One deposit, one decision. Payments start within 1–12 months.
- You choose the payout: your life only, joint life with your spouse, or a set period of years.
- The payout rate is often higher than any “safe withdrawal rate” — because you’re pooling longevity risk with everyone else.
- The trade: you give up access to the lump sum. This is a paycheck now, not a savings account.
The “Personal Pension” Idea
Most of us don’t get pensions anymore. A SPIA rebuilds one. The smartest way most retirees use it: add up your essential monthly bills, subtract Social Security, and buy a SPIA to cover the gap. Now your must-pay expenses are covered by guaranteed income forever, and your remaining investments can ride out market swings without forcing you to sell in a crash.
“But What If I Die Early?”
The most common objection, and it has real answers. Options like “life with 10-year certain” or “cash refund” guarantee your beneficiaries receive the remaining value if you die early. Those features lower your monthly check a bit — that’s the honest trade-off, and it’s your call.
Who SPIAs Are For
Retirees who need reliable income right now. If you’re still 5–20 years out, the same idea with a later start date — and a bigger payout — is called a deferred income annuity. And before you commit a lump sum anywhere, read how annuity payments are taxed — SPIA checks get favorable treatment when funded with after-tax money.
Rob’s Take
“People spend decades saving and then discover the hard part: turning a pile of money into a paycheck you can’t outlive. A SPIA does exactly one job, and it does it better than anything else. The key is only annuitizing the slice of savings you need for essentials — never the whole pile.”
