Long-term care is a women’s issue twice over: women are most likely to need extended care, and most likely to be the ones providing it. If you plan for only one person in a marriage, plan for her. Here’s long-term care for women, straight.

The Double Exposure

  • Longer lives, longer care. Women live about five years longer than men and need care for meaningfully longer — often 3.5+ years versus about 2 for men. Most nursing home residents are women.
  • She cares for him first. In many couples, the wife nurses her husband through his care years at home — which is precisely why his care often costs little and hers costs everything: when her turn comes, the caregiver is gone.
  • Solo by the finish. Widowhood means many women face their own care years alone, making decisions and writing checks with no partner to lean on.

The Caregiver Trap

Roughly two-thirds of family caregivers are women — daughters and wives cutting hours, passing promotions, and pausing their own retirement savings to provide unpaid care. A funded care plan for the people you love is also a career and retirement protection plan for you. That’s the part nobody says out loud, so we’re saying it.

Planning Moves That Fit

Couples should design coverage assuming she’ll need more of it — shared-benefit hybrid policies let two spouses draw from one pool. Single women should look hard at hybrids and annuity-based LTC, and everyone should read when to buy — the answer is younger than you think. Note: unlike life insurance, where women get cheaper rates, most LTC pricing charges women more because they claim more. One more reason not to wait.

Part of the Bigger Picture for Women

This piece belongs to our women’s planning series. Pair it with life insurance for women made simple, what women actually pay, and annuities for women — because a longer life needs both income and care funded.

Rob’s Take

“In 25 years I’ve watched the same story on repeat: she takes care of everyone, and no one plans for her. The best gift a couple can give each other is a plan that assumes she outlives him — because she probably will.”
